Fine for Illegally Downloading of Music from Internet in Singapore

Fined up to S$20,000 and be convicted to up to six months imprisonment term. Distributors of MP3s illegally via media can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $100,000.

In November 2005, the International Federation for Phonographic Industry (IFPI), worked in hand with the Record Industry Association of Singapore (RIAS) against the illegal distribution of music files on the internet. 33 suspects’ home were raided, with aid from RIAS, who provided the police Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of offenders.

Downloading of music has been available in Singapore since the days of Internet Relay Chat (IRC), then expanding into free music sharing sites and P2P sharing, but the law is believed to have caught up with such acts in Singapore. It is considered a criminal offence under the Copyright Act.
